The role
The role will be part of the team based in Darlington where the company has dedicated workshop facilities.
Partial re-equipment of the machining facilities is envisaged, and the successful applicant will be invited to assist in the specification of machines and tooling.
From time to time there may be a requirement to manufacture new or to refurbish existing components for other locomotives or assets including
No. 60163 Tornado, an engine built by A1SLT.
Summary of Post
The post reports into the Engineering Workshop Manager.
The employee will be an experienced manual machinist/fitter, with proven capability in manufacturing components from ferrous and non-ferrous raw materials or castings.
The applicant will be required to maintain and promote safe working practices and contribute to the safety of others. He/she will adhere to the Trust’s safety processes and contribute to the overall management of safety in and around the work site.
The applicant should be familiar with:
- Centre lathes
- Universal milling machines (e.g. Bridgeport)
- Manufacturing adequate and appropriate tooling for the above
- Use of digital readout on machines
- Measurement using conventional micrometer and Vernier equipment
The role will include the use of other machinery which may be acquired in due course.
Position Requirements
Formal Education & Certification
- NVQ or City and Guilds qualification in machining or an allied field
- GCSE (A* - C) or equivalent in mathematics
- Fluency in spoken and written English
Knowledge & Experience
- High skill level in manual milling and turning work of ferrous and non-ferrous materials
- Experience and proven competence in single point thread cutting of male and female threads
- Conversant with both metric and imperial units
- Able to follow and interpret historical drawings
- Mechanical fitting experience
- Clear understanding of the importance of material traceability and certification
