As part of the Trust’s preparation for
Tornado’s steam test in early January the first phase of track laying at Darlington Locomotive Works has now been completed.
Here we have the first stage of the preparation of the track bed outside the works:
The next stage was to lay the bottom ballast:
After which the track gang got into their stride.... !!
And here is the final result:
Our thanks go to the Wensleydale Railway Association Infrastructure Volunteers, led by Colin Brown (second from right above) who laid the four 37ft lengths of rail and two sets of fishplates over Saturday and half of Sunday as well as levelling the finished track. They did this work at well under the cost compared with use of a professional track work company. The track will be ballasted up to rail height on Monday 17th December by Wades who have done the preparation work. This will enable HGVs to access the works directly.
