WIN A RIDE ON MALLARD’S FOOTPLATE TO SHILDON, HAULED BY TORNADO
The National Railway Museum (NRM) in York is giving one lucky person the opportunity to ride on the footplate of Mallard as she is pulled up to Locomotion, the NRM in Shildon, by Tornado on Wednesday 23 June. To be in with a chance of winning this amazing experience all you need to do is visit the National Railway Museum to enter your details into a free prize draw* which will be drawn after the Museum closes on Sunday 20 June.
Steve Davies, NRM Director, said: “We’re so excited to be able to offer one lucky person the chance to ride on Mallard’s footplate. She’s a very popular locomotive so we’re sure that we’ll have lots of people entering the prize draw. Due to mainline operating schedules, Mallard may not leave the NRM in York until very late on the evening of the 23rd, so anyone entering the competition needs to be prepared to stay up late for their once in a lifetime experience!”
On Wednesday 9 June, Mallard made the first move of her journey when she was shunted onto the NRM’s famous turntable and into the workshop for final preparations before her journey to the NRM in Shildon.
Mallard will be in the Museum’s workshop from Wednesday 9 June for approximately 2 weeks, where the NRM team will be making final preparations to ensure that she is ready for her big journey to Locomotion, the NRM in Shildon. Mallard fans will get the exciting opportunity to step inside the workshop where special free tours will give them a unique experience of seeing Mallard up close while finding out all about the work involved in getting the famous locomotive ready for her trip on the mainline. For full details and tour times, please visit www.nrm.org.uk/mallard.
Steve Davies, NRM Director, said: “Even though Mallard won’t be travelling up to Locomotion under her own steam, there is still a lot of preparation to be done. This involves lubrication, checking the braking systems and fitting some new air brakes. We’re pleased to be doing this work during Museum opening hours so that visitors have the chance to watch and get an insight into the work we do at the NRM.”
The workshop tours will start on Friday 11 June and will take place at 3.30pm and 4.30pm every day until Mallard is moved out of the workshop. Please note that space on the tours will be limited to 10 people. Larger workshop round up tours will also take place on the workshop balcony at 11.30am on weekdays, and 11am at weekends.

* The free prize draw is open to over 18s only. One entry per person. Restrictions apply. Entries must be submitted by 6pm on Sunday 20 June. Prize draw must be entered at the National Railway Museum in York.
