The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust is delighted to have been awarded a grant by the Tees Valley Community Foundation. This award has been made possible thanks to TVCF donors. The grant is specifically to help the Trust build its volunteer base, providing resources such as refreshments and safety equipment for those that lend their time. The funding will benefit volunteers at the Trust’s base in Darlington, and at fundraising events across the country.

From the Chairman and Trustees to train stewards and open day hosts, the Trust relies on its committed volunteers. As a charity, our volunteers are vital to our success and we recognise that volunteering also provides a platform for people to meet and use their skills, increasing overall wellbeing. It is documented that volunteering and socialising with people who share your interests keeps the brain active, improves mental health, makes you feel happier and reduces feelings of loneliness. Our volunteers have re-found their sense of purpose, made new friends, and rekindled old friendships.

We are pleased to be offering the opportunity for volunteers to join the ‘Brew Crew’ and pop into Darlington Locomotive Works for a cup of tea and a natter on days when they’re not working! The Brew Crew Programme will provide a safe place for those retiring from a career or with time on their hands to meet people with common interests. Volunteers will be able to build friendships and work together towards the same mission: the future of steam on the UK main line railway. Physical activity is highly important when it comes to staying healthy and independent as we age, and volunteering can keep you moving and helps to retain physical fitness. Our programme will also incorporate some cross generational aspects where heritage skills and knowledge are shared with younger people, vital for the continued operation of steam locomotives on today’s railway.

New Office Manger Jacqui Nicholson is championing this cause, recognising the importance of volunteers to our organisation and the positive impact volunteering can have on individuals. She commented “I hope that this grant will help to make volunteering with the Trust more accessible to more people. I look forward to seeing lots of new faces at the Works and Trust events, as well as warmly welcoming back those who have previously committed their time to the Trust.”

We are looking for new volunteers to assist with the build of new Gresley P2 Class No. 2007 Prince of Wales and the operation of A1 Class No.60163 Tornado. From administration and engineering, to engaging new supporters or selling merchandise, there are plenty of ways to lend a hand.
